Northwind Arts Center in Port Townsend, Washington cultivates and encourages the arts by showcasing and serving visual, literary and performance artists, and fosters arts appreciation and education in the greater community. On June 16th I will be teaching a course “Inspired by Nature” that is free to the public and available for the first 15 attendees. The mission of Northwind Arts Center is to connect arts and community. Founded in 2001, The Northwind Arts Center is a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to promoting the arts in Northwest region by sponsoring educational programs, lectures, readings, and workshops, and by providing juried and invitational venues for displaying the work of regional artists, both visual and literary.
Through the Wall is a partnership program between Northwind Arts Center and The Boiler Room, a volunteer-operated coffeehouse and social services hub dedicated to building community by providing a safe space for the growth and improvement of individuals. Through the Wall provides visual art instruction from compensated artists (recruited by Northwind) to clientele of The Boiler Room, the majority of which are young people. The program fosters a collaborative relationship between Northwind and The Boiler Room as neighbors in the community, through our adjoining wall, and will support young and emerging visual artists – funded in part by a grant from Kitsap Bank.

Participants will be guided in artistic exercises to connect with elements of the natural world. Drawing upon outer and inner observation, each artist will create a uniquely personal landscape that is multi-layered. Through the use of mixed media materials and an open imagination, each participant will explore the disciplines of nonrepresentational abstract expressionism and conceptual observation. Each participant will produce a one-of-a-kind work of art, inspired by nature. Materials are provided and the class is free but limited to 15 participants on a first come, first served basis.
Annalisa Barelli is a painter and illustrator with a background in studio art, psychology, and environmental studies. She creates from many disciplines and experiences and has a passion for using art as a means for connection. For more about her work visit www.annalisabarelli.com.
